Epidemiology, nephrology fellows join Medical Center faculty

Medical Center leadership is proud to announce the following additions to its faculty and leadership staff.

Bhagyashri D. Navalkele, M.D.

Dr. Bhagyashri D. Navalkele, recently an infection control and hospital epidemiology fellow at Wayne State University Detroit Medical Center, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of medicine.

After receiving her M.B.B.S. from Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Medical College, Mumbai, India, in 2009, Navalkele had an internal medicine internship from 2011-12 and an internal medicine residency from 2012-14 at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, and an infectious diseases fellowship from 2014-16 and an infection control and hospital epidemiology fellowship from 2016-17 at Wayne State University Detroit Medical Center, where she was chief fellow in the Division of Infectious Diseases.

An active member of several professional organizations, including the American College of Physicians, the Infectious Diseases Society of America and the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America, Navalkele is the author or coauthor of five articles in peer-reviewed professional publications, one book chapter and six posters presented at scientific meetings.

Dr. Maria Lourdes Gonzalez Suarez, a recent nephrology fellow at the Mayo Clinic, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of medicine.

After earning her M.D. cum laude at Universidad de Monterrey Facultad de Medecina, Mexico, in 2004, Suarez received her Ph.D. in immunology from Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon, Monterrey, Mexico, in 2009. She concluded postgraduate training in internal medicine at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital in 2015 and had a nephrology fellowship at the Mayo Clinic from 2014-17.

Suarez served as an assistant professor at Universidad Autonomo de Nuevo Leon from 2006-07 and in 2011, and as an assistant professor at Universidad de Monterrey from 2010-11. An active member of several professional organizations, including the American Medical Association, the American Society of Nephrology and the American College of Physicians, Suarez has given eight presentations internationally. The author or coauthor of 14 articles in peer-reviewed professional publications, one book chapter and 16 abstracts, her research interests include glomerular disease, hypertension, onco-nephrology, renal transplant and immunology.
